When we are younger, we tend to think we are invincible when it comes to our general health and wellbeing. We don’t think about the potential long-term effects of various actions like not wearing sunscreen or sunglasses when we are spending time outdoors in the sun.
Not wearing sunscreen can lead to various types of skin cancer. The UV rays of the sun can cause damage to your eyes and affect eyesight. Fortunately, you can be proactive and use these healthy vision tips now while you are young to avoid potential vision and eyesight problems later in life.
1. Get LASIK or another type of laser vision correction surgery.
If you wear contacts or glasses, you should consider laser eye surgery. Most young adults are ideal candidates for LASIK and other such procedures. Imagine not having to clean your glasses, deal with putting contacts in and out or cleaning them, and other such things you do right now. Plus, you will enjoy having the freedom to enjoy sports, swim, and do other things and having no worries about not being able to see clearly.
2. Spend time disconnected from your devices.
Young adults spend a lot of time on tablets, smartphones, gaming systems, and other digital devices. Get into the habit of taking regular breaks every 20 minutes. Put the device down and spend about one minute looking at something that is at least 20 feet away.
Even better, take a break every hour and spend 10 to 15 minutes or longer off the device. Go outside and get some fresh air. Go for a walk. Go for a swim if you have a swimming pool. Ride your bike around the block.
3. Wear eye protection when necessary.
Put on UV-protecting sunglasses when heading outside, even on cloudy and overcast days. If you work with heavy equipment or machinery, wear protective goggles. When cleaning the home and working with cleaning chemicals, wear safety glasses or other protective eyewear.
4. Schedule regular eye exams every one to two years.
Until you get laser eye surgery, you should keep up with regular eye exams. If you wear contacts, see your eye doctor annually. If you wear glasses, you may only need to have your eyes checked every two years.
5. Adjust your lifestyle and habits.
Incorporate some healthy choices with your meals and snacks like fresh fruits and vegetables. If you smoke or vape, take steps to give this habit up. If you drink alcohol, limit your drinking to one or two drinks a few times each week. Try to exercise at least three times a week for half an hour. Last, get at least seven hours of restful sleep each night.
By using these healthy vision tips while you are young, you can help protect your vision and potentially avoid vision problems later in life, as well as reduce risks for certain eye conditions.
